I’m really pleased with myself today because I went to the swimming pool for the first time in years and I swam for the best part of an hour. Though I’ve always been quite fit I’m terrible at swimming. Today was in effect the start of my preparation for completing my triathlon challenge. To put the level of challenge into perspective, today I struggled to cover more than 50 metres in one go. For the triathlon I’m going to need to swim 1500 metres in open water. I’ve made the first step though and got myself in the pool. Readers of this blog will know water isn’t my thing and despite have swimming lessons from an early age and going every week with my primary school I’ve just never been very good at it. I’m not comfortable in the water and don’t find swimming a natural activity.
I’m hoping to go swimming once a week to build up my time in the water before attempting to swim in open water. I’m also hoping to get some coaching as well because though I’m not as fit as I would like to be I think my technique is letting me down greatly. Having said all this if it wasn’t a challenge I wouldn’t be interested in doing it and it’s about time I got my swimming sorted. I think completing the triathlon will finally get the tick in that box for me.
