30 days of cold showers – challenge completed!

This has been the hardest of the 30 day challenges by far.  Going from a nice warm bed into a cold shower every morning for the past 30 days hasn’t got any easier.  I’d somehow convinced myself that doing this challenge in June would make it easier… it didn’t.  I’ve spent time in countries without access to a hot shower but they tended to be places where a cold shower was needed anyway.  Our summer hasn’t been quite like that yet…

On the plus side this mornings warm shower was perhaps the greatest shower I’ve ever had in my life and before 6am I’d managed to get my photograph for the day  my current challenge (see picture number 10).  I might also start appreciating what I take for granted that little bit more :-)

Start of the last 30 day challenge

Posted on

With just over a week left of cold showers and no music I’m about to begin my last 30 day challenge. This is perhaps the nicest of the 5 I’ve completing and will require thought rather than any physical hardship or effort. I’ve got to take a photograph a day for the next 30 days.

I’m not aiming for a particular theme or to achieve a particular aim I just need to take a photo a day. Hopefully this will slow me down a bit during the usually hectic days I have and it will be interesting to see what collage of images I have in 30 days time.

Here’s the first one, which if I had to give it a title or caption would be “something missing”

Feels like its been gone that long that I should have turned it into a 30 day challenge… It’s fixed now after destroying itself and should be sent back soon.

A third of the way through and the cold showers aren’t getting any warmer

Posted on

Today is day 11 of 30 of me having cold showers and not listening to any music. Unlike the other 30 day challenges these two aren’t getting any easier and I can’t forget about them!

Having a cold shower after a long ride on the bike or a morning run is quite nice but first thing in a morning after getting out of bed it is something else. I can’t wait for the 27th of June when this challenge is up. It is certainly testing my resolve and honesty (not really a challenge I want everyone else checking up on…).

The no music challenge is less strict than the other 30 day challenges in that it is partly out of my control. I can’t help for example music on a tv advert or music that is playing in a supermarket. Where I am missing out, and where the challenge lies, is when I’m in the car or at home. I’m so used to having music on in the kitchen that it is eerie without it. Similarly in the car. On the occasions when I drive instead of cycle an hour without music is quite a long time. I think it will make me appreciate music more when I get to hear music of my own choosing again but I’m sure it will quickly go back to being background noise again.

2 x 30 day challenges

Today marked the start of two 30 day challenges – 30 days of cold showers and 30 days without music. The first is entirely within my own hands but the second a little less so.

Despite the recent warm weather I’m not expecting the cold showers to be any more bearable or for the hot weather to last 30 days for that matter!

I’m not going to listen to music by my own choosing for 30 days but clearly there is nothing I can do if I enter a shop on there is music playing or the fact that my classroom at work is next to the Music block. In both cases I’d much prefer not to hear the noise!

So here’s to being cold and quiet for the next 30 days :-)

No IPhone for 30 days challenge completed!

Posted on

Completing this challenge wasn’t overly difficult and it did prove to me that I don’t need to have the thing as an extension of my hand.  Emails will still be there when I get home and there are plenty of better things to be doing than checking everything every 2 seconds.  That being the case a smart phone is incredibly useful and does have lots of benefits.  It will come in particularly handy for the photograph a day for 30 days challenge and I now have music in the car when my stereo is playing up…

IPhone less

So, what’s it like without my Iphone? Well I definitely do a lot less unnecessary messing about checking things that I don’t need to check… but overall I still reckon I’m much better with one than I am without. At the moment I’m missing out on music in the car (the car stereo doesn’t work, amongst other things but that’s another story…), I no longer have a camera on me if I need to use one, I don’t have my calendar (diary) with me so I have to remember to add things at the end of the day…

I would never argue that a smart phone is a want rather than a need but it is incredibly useful to have some many different tools all in one device.

Perhaps going 30 days without one will make me appreciate that fact all the more when I get it back.

Two 30 day Challenges

From tomorrow (6th February) until the 7th of March I won’t be using my IPhone and I’ll be meditating for 15 minutes each day. I’ve decided to do these two 30 day challenges at the same time as they seem to compliment each other quite nicely. It is also somewhat fitting that I am currently teaching my Yr8 class about Buddhism!

MyfitnessPal

When I was about half way through my 30 day vegetarian challenge I downloaded an app for my phone called MyFitnessPal.  By inputting your exercise and food intake the app maps the amount of calories you are eating and shows how balanced your diet is.  Aimed, I suspect, primarily at those trying to lose weight I decided to start to use the programme to see how vegetarianism was affecting my body, if at all.  What surprised me the most was how balanced my diet seemed to be without eating meat.  I rarely eat enough food, which is part of the reason I have started using the app, being so busy all the time.  With the level of physical exercise I’m doing I need to make sure that I take enough food on board so that I don’t keel over!  I don’t think that it is healthy to become too obsessed with calories and food but I do think that the free app is a great way of motivating people to do more exercise and keep an eye on what they are eating.  It is going to be interesting to see how the stats change for me now that I have started eating meat again.

30 day vegetarian challenge completed!

Vegetarian 'gumbo' (06)

Yesterday (Tuesday 22nd November) was the last day of my 30 day vegetarian challenge.  This has probably been my biggest challenge so far so I’m glad that it is out of the way :-)  The hardest aspect has been the restricted choice that I’ve had, especially when going out for a meal.  I’ve invariably found that there is often only one vegetarian option and if that doesn’t take your fancy… tough!  To celebrate the end of the challenge I’ve just been for a meal at my favourite Persian restaurant and had my staple main course: lamb shank. Delicious.
