Random Act of Kindness Number 3

Posted on

I’m away for 3 weeks as of tomorrow so I wanted to make sure I got one of these in during the week before I go.  I actually did two things for this one:

  1. After getting my haircut at a newly opened barbers I left a tip of 100%
  2. I bought lunch for a homeless guy that sits outside my local Tesco
For the 1st one I was really impressed with the young man who has just set up his business and really want him to do well.  Leaving a tip was quite easy.
For the 2nd of the two acts listed above the cost financially was very minimal (£2.50) but making it happen and knowing the best way to go about it wasn’t easy.  Most people seem to view spontaneous acts of kindness with suspicion.  What I’ve been finding already about this particular challenge is that it isn’t often the act itself that is that difficult part, rather it’s having the guts to do it in the first place.  In some ways challenges I’ve done in the past, like throwing myself out of planes, have been much easier because I can remain detached.
I’m glad I did both of these things because I spoke to two people I wouldn’t have ordinarily and my tiny acts might have made bigger impacts on other people than they did on me.

My first act of kindness was aimed at helping someone I know very well and to whom I am closely related (my brother).  This second act is aimed at alleviating the suffering of people I have never met in a place I have never been:

Text “AFRICA” to 70000 to donate £5

That was my small random act of kindness for this week :-)

I also found this very humbling letter whilst researching the topic:

A very noble gesture indeed from someone so young.

I’m intending to do a random act of kindness each week of the challenges 30 year, so that should be 52 in total. This is number 1:

On Saturday night I was invited to dinner with my brother and some of his friends.  Instead of acting like a guest I offered to cook the meal :-)

If you need the proof you can see the efforts of my labour here.

If you’re wondering what it is? It’s a honeyed lamb and apricot tagine.

I read the book Random Acts of Kindness by Danny Wallace a while ago and though trying to follow the idea have never really made a firm commitment to it.  Until now that is.  You can read more about the idea here.  In simple terms I need to complete one random act of kindness each week.  Though I’d like you to join in  (you can keep your random acts secret if you like, some of the best ones are) I’ll be posting on here to let you know what I did.
